Computer beginners and professionals will find helpful lessons, tutorials and link references on this website.  I have been involved in multimedia and new creative arts for over fifteen years.  I took my first computer course in 1982.  So, I'm an old timer.   I have degrees in business and communications and broadcasting and have also chalked a couple of years of computer programming courses.  I work in public access television production and also do professional photography on the side .... in my spare time.  Oh yea, one of my jobs was working for a major internet company as a technical support specialist.  These pages are from notes I took over the years.  There is so much to learn and the computer industry as well as the digital photography, videography and audio industries are constantly changing.  I hate paying for anything, so I have collected as much free stuff as I can and I started to take notes and collect great links.  Hope my notes help you too!

How do I edit my site?

1.  Obtain a Web Editing Program - You will need a website editing program such as FrontPage, Dreamweaver, Netscape Composer, Publisher or other (or know straight html).  You can get lite versions of many of the programs for free as a download.  These free or lite versions do not have many of the features as the full versions that you pay for, but they will let you edit one page at a time.  If you want the luxury of organizing your entire site, you will have to purchase the full version of one of the above programs.  Normally, a web hosting company will not provide support on web editing programs.  You must learn to use the program yourself and fix any related problems yourself.  (See the front page of the techsupportforum for links to free downloads).

2.  Write down username and password - You will need your username and password so you can upload the changes to your website.  Uploading is also called "Publishing" your site.

3.  Download FTP Program - You may also need an FTP program (File Transfer Protocol) to transfer your changed files to the server.   Try CORE FTP LE which is a free download with no limitations.

4.  Import your website into your web editing program - If you are using the full version of one of the above programs then begin by IMPORTING your web into the program.  This will allow you to see all of the files and folders of your website.

OR

Download the one file you will edit into your free web editing program - If you are using a FREE version, then you must open the FTP program.  Find the file you want to edit, pull the file onto the hard drive of your computer ("drag and drop").  Open the file in the free web editing program, make your changes, SAVE then put the file back (upload) onto the server with your FTP program.  (See our Core-FTP directions for a more detailed explanation of downloading and uploading).

5.  Upload the changes to the website server - This is also called "publishing your site".  You might find a button that says "publish" or "upload".  If you don't know how to upload your files to the server, press "help" in the program you are using and look for "publish" or "upload" or "transfer"  or "ftp".  You should be able to find specific directions for the program you are using.

6.  Graphics Optimization - It is a good idea to learn to optimize graphics so that your graphics and pictures come up fast.  Look at the graphics area of this website to learn more.  However, if you are just learning to edit your site, it may be better to start with editing text and learn the graphics little by little.
