I want to create or edit my site using FrontPage.
STEP 1:           PART I:
Creating a Site From Scratch With Frontpage
  1. To begin creating a web page.   How to start from the time you open the program.  (This procedure can also be used if   you are already in FrontPage Explorer)  Press FILE - NEW - FRONTPAGE WEB - then the correct dialogue box will pop up.)  Note:  This is not for people who already have a web page created and want to import it. This is for people who are starting from scratch with an empty page.
  2. You do not have to be online or connected to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to follow these directions.
  3. In the GETTING STARTED dialogue box, select Create a New FrontPage Web
  4. The "NEW FRONTPAGE WEB" Dialogue box will appear.
  5. Select "EMPTY WEB"
  6. Name your web page.  NOTE:  This is the name that will show up on your hard drive.  Name it anything you want because it is only used for you to identify it for editing purposes.  No one else will see it.
  7. Select the CHANGE button.
  8. Check the name and location of the file after pressing the change button.  Be sure that the drive and directory are correctly named.  If not, change it now.  Include the complete path like this:
c:\websitedirectory\mywebsname   If you don't already have these directories created, FrontPage will create them for you.
  9. Press OK
  10. Press OK again
  11. Press YES to create.
  12. You will then have a beginning screen.
  13. In the upper left corner you will see a white square indicating that you can make a new page.  Press the white new page icon.
  14. Now you will see a HOME PAGE box in the middle of the screen.  Double click on the home page box to create an index.htm page.
  15. At this point, I usually close the program and reopen it again.  Then find INDEX.htm in the file listings and click twice on it to open the document for editing.
  16. Edit away and remember to save your edits by pressing the diskette icon at the top of the page.

NOTE:  FrontPage extensions must be loaded on the web hosting server.  Otherwise, you will not be able to use automatic features.  You cannot load them yourself.  Please request that Tech's Choice load the FrontPage Extensions for your site.

    PART II:
  17. Your index.htm page is not yet on the internet.  You must PUBLISH this page to the internet before you can view it from a browser on another computer.
  18. You must be online to publish.  So, connect to the internet.
  19. Note:  Your home page MUST be named either index.htm or index.html or your web page will not show up on the internet.   All other pages can be named whatever you want, but make sure your front home page has those names and extensions.
  20. Select FILE from the top menu.
  21. Press PUBLISH FrontPage Web
Extra Note:  Be sure that "PUBLISH CHANGES ONLY" is checked off and that Include child webs is NOT checked.
  22. A dialogue box will pop up.  Type in:
         http://www.yourdomain.com   OR

If you can't use your domain name yet and only have your IP#, type in http://222.222.222.2  The 2's, of course will be replaced by your IP#'s.  If you don't know what an IP# is, you can ask your web host what yours is.  Every web site MUST have an IP number.  Some web hosts have many accounts "sharing" IP numbers - make sure your account has its own unique IP number and that you're not sharing with anyone else.
  23. Press OK
  24. Press OK again
  25. You will be asked for your user name and password.  You may have a user name and password for your entire site OR it will be your FTP username and Password OR it will be a special password specifically for FrontPage.  If you host with Tech's Choice, it will simply be your main account user name and password.
  26. Now look in the lower left corner of the screen and you will be able to follow the progress of the upload.  You will see:
    Listing Pages in c:\whatever directory
    Listing Pages on http://whateverdomain.com
    Publishing Pages 60% complete
You may also be asked if you want to overwrite a document that has been changed.   Double check the name and usually press YES unless you think you've made an error in your editing.
Then you'll see Publishing Pages 100% Complete
    Fixing Links to Home Page
    Processing Web Updates
    Published to http://www.whateverdomain.com
  27. This process can take anywhere from one minute to 30 minutes and up, depending on the size of your web files, the number of graphics you're uploading, the speed of your modem and the internet connection speed.
  28. When your pages are published, you will see the words "Published to FrontPage Web" in the lower left corner.

NOTE: If you want more control over files and directories or if you want to see what other files you have in your domain directories, you can view and move everything with a program called WS_FTP.  This program allows you to upload (publish) files from your computer to the server where your domain is located.  It also allows you to download files from the server to your computer.  A demo of this program is available on our download page.
