I want to edit my site using FrontPage.
STEP 2:           PART I:
Opening an Existing Site, Editing a Page
  1. Go online and open your Browser (the program you surf the internet with).
AOL Users:  First connect to AOL, minimize the AOL program, then open Netscape (without disconnecting).
NOTE:  If you've just created a site from scratch, skip below to
    PART II.
  2. Browse (go to) the home page of the site you want to edit.  Write down the address (URL)  http://www.whateversite.com.
You may go to one specific page, however, a "site" must already be created in FrontPage.  These directions assume that you do not have any of the files for your site on your computer yet.  Follow the directions here and you will be able to pull all the files for your site off the server and onto your computer for editing and republishing.  This process is called "importing" your site files into FrontPage.
  3. To import and existing web site into FrontPage.   How to start from the time you open the program.  (This procedure can also be used if [in FrontPage Explorer - not the Editor] you press FILE - NEW - FRONTPAGE WEB - then the correct dialogue box will pop up.)
  4. In the Getting Started dialogue box, select Create a New FrontPage Web
  5. The "NEW FRONTPAGE WEB" Dialogue box will appear.
  6. Select "Import Existing Web"
  7. Move on to the step below.
  8. Name your web page.  NOTE:  This is the name that will show up on your hard drive.  Name it anything you want because it is only used for you to identify it for editing purposes.  No one else will see it.
  9. Select the CHANGE button.
  10. Check the name and location of the file after pressing the change button.  This is where your imported web will be downloaded to on your hard drive.  Be sure that the drive and directory are correctly named.  If not, change it now.  Include the complete path like this:
c:\websitedirectory\mywebsname   If you don't already have these directories created, FrontPage will create them for you.
  11. Press OK
  12. An Import Web Wizard dialogue box will appear
  13. If you're importing from your hard drive, leave the selection at the default.
If you're importing from the World Wide Web, select the second option
  14. If you're importing from your hard drive, put the path into the location bar like this c:\whateverdirectory\webdirectory
If you're importing from the world wide web, put in the URL or the site like this http://www.whateverweb.com
  15. Press OK
  16. You will then be asked to choose the download amount:
    UNCHECK Limit to this page
    UNCHECK Limit to ____ KB
UNCHECK Limit to Text and Image Files
Move the number in the upper right to 15 Levels Below or more.
  17. Select FINISH
  18. You must be connected to the internet for this to work.  If you are not presently connected, do so now.
  19. Find INDEX.htm in the file listings and click twice on it to open the document for editing.
  20. Edit away and remember to save your edits by pressing the diskette icon at the top of the page.
  21. Now you can work on your changes from the files on your hard drive without being connected to the internet.  ALL changes made on your hard drive will have to be published up to the server each time you make changes.

PART II - Opening and Editing a Page:
  22. Open FrontPage and select the web site you'd like to work on.
  23. Once the site is open, you will see folders and pages.  Click twice on the page you'd like to work on and the FrontPage Editor will open.  FrontPage opens two windows:  1.  FrontPage Explorer - where you can view the different files and folders, and 2.  FrontPage Editor - where you can make editing changes to text, graphics and colors.

    PART III:
  24. The page will open and it will look like a lot of words and pictures inside of dotted lines.  These are the table borders.   You should probably keep the table borders the way they are until you learn more about how to line everything up using tables.
  25. You can view and edit the HTML for the entire page by selecting the HTML tab at the bottom left of your screen.  Do not edit these lines until you know more about HTML.
