Computer beginners and professionals will find helpful lessons, tutorials and link references on this website.  I have been involved in multimedia and new creative arts for over fifteen years.  I took my first computer course in 1982.  So, I'm an old timer.   I have degrees in business and communications and broadcasting and have also chalked a couple of years of computer programming courses.  I work in public access television production and also do professional photography on the side .... in my spare time.  Oh yea, one of my jobs was working for a major internet company as a technical support specialist.  These pages are from notes I took over the years.  There is so much to learn in the computer industry as well as the digital photography, videography and audio industries are constantly changing.  I hate paying for anything, so I have collected as much free stuff as I can and I started to take notes and collect great links.  Hope my notes help you too!

Article: Increasing Search Engine Traffic for Free

I've owned numerous websites since 1998.  I make money with adsense, for-sale ads on various sites and e-commerce, selling various services and goods.  I'm a do-it-yourselfer.  I never want to pay anyone ... nor do I want to pay for clicks or ads.  It really irritates me when I click on a "free information: Here's how to make money!  Here's how to increase traffic!" and they want me to buy their e-mail book or join their program in order to get their "free" information.  If you don't have a Google Adsense account yet, click here to sign up.

So, I've decided not to be irritating and share what I know ..... really..... for free.

DO NOT SPEND MONEY to gain traffic.  "If you build it, traffic will come!" - GuruGal

1.  Select a great domain name.  It's like real estate.  Location, location, location.  If you have a domain name that is nine miles long or no one can remember, what good does it do you?  Here are some tips.  Say the name out loud to someone.  If they say "What?  Say that again?  How do you spell that?, then find another name.  Do not use dashes and / or other symbols in your name.  Remember, it needs to be easy to say.  I take days to figure out new domain names, sometimes weeks.  I spend hours looking up the perfect name.  Then, when I find it, I buy it right away.

2.  My advice.  Learn to design websites and cut and paste code yourself.  I assume if you are reading this, you are already familiar with the cut and paste procedures from Google Adsense.  But you must be able to go into each page on your website and change the title, metatags and descriptions.

3.  Start on your pages.  Each page should contain 3 things:

      1.  TITLE:  A "short" clearly defined title about what the page is about.
      2.  Metatags:  (hidden code in the header of your web page).  If you don't have the proper metatags,
you need to add them.  You should have, at a minimum:  Description, Keywords,  and
                        <meta name="ROBOTS" content="ALL,INDEX,FOLLOW"/>
      3.  Keywords on your page.  Hone your page so that it is about ONE topic.  You want the search
engines to have to place you under your page's topic.  Don't confuse it.

Note:  Some search engines categorize by title, some categorize by metatags, some categorize by keywords, others are simply directories and categorize by human placement and still others, don't categorize by any of those things.  So you have to prepare for everyone.  There are many different ways that search engines place.  The three must-haves listed here are just the beginning.

WARNING:  Do not lace the page with keywords.  You will get banned.  It takes just a little longer to actually create meaningful content.  Plus I don't want to go to your page and just see the same word over and over again.  So, do it for me!

3.  FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS.  You don't want a site that is all over the place with all types of topics.  Select a topic that you know and love well and focus on that topic.  Find links, write articles, write reviews, but focus on ONE topic.

4.  Content vs. advertising / adsense.  Ok.  Everyone wants to make money.  But seriously, if I find that your website doesn't have anything I am interested in, I'm leaving AND I'M NEVER COMING BACK!!!! You want repeat customers.  So, write something useful and meaningful and you will be rewarded for it.

If you have more ads than content, your site will plunge lower and lower in the Search Engine Pit of Despair (SEPD).  If you want to climb higher, create more content than ads.

5.  It takes TIME.  I did a site for a friend a couple of weeks ago and got her placed pretty good in the search engines and she said to me.  "Why do I only see seven unique visitors to my site?  It's not working."  I said "You have to be kidding me, NO ONE KNOWS YOU'RE THERE!"   If your site has been up for only a few weeks, give me a break....don't hurt yourself, but think about it!

OK, now really.  A site, at a minimum, usually takes about a year to get a decent amount of visitors.  A year, IF you create meaningful content and work STEADILY at building your site.  It takes a lot more than showing up in the search engines.  Traffic has to build over time.

6.  Any changes you make will take a MINIMUM OF THREE MONTHS to see the effects of.

7.  You can submit your site to search engines, but don't overdo it on directory links or reciprocal links.  Some are fine and will help, others will just junk up your site with too many "reciprocal links."
