Class Notes

Computer beginners and professionals will find helpful lessons, tutorials and link references on this website.  I have been involved in multimedia and new creative arts for over fifteen years.  I took my first computer course in 1982.  So, I'm an old timer.   I have degrees in business and communications and broadcasting and have also chalked a couple of years of computer programming courses.  I work in public access television production and also do professional photography on the side .... in my spare time.  Oh yea, one of my jobs was working for a major internet company as a technical support specialist.  These pages are from notes I took over the years.  There is so much to learn in the computer industry as well as the digital photography, videography and audio industries are constantly changing.  I hate paying for anything, so I have collected as much free stuff as I can and I started to take notes and collect great links.  Hope my notes help you too!

I want to edit my site using Netscape Composer.
STEP 2:           PART I:
Opening an Existing Site, Editing a Page
  1. Go online and open the Netscape Browser (the program you surf the internet with).
AOL Users:  First connect to AOL, minimize the AOL program, then open Netscape (without disconnecting).
  2. Browse (go to) the page you want to edit.
  3. Locate the LOCATION BAR at the top of Netscape.  (The long white bar that has http:// etc.)
  4. Click once inside of the bar so that the words inside of the bar turn blue (highlighted).
  5. Right click your mouse button and select COPY.  This copies the location of the page for you.
Another method:  You may also write down the page address (URL) then type it in when we open Composer.   It will look something like this:   http://www.yourdomain.com/thepageyouwant.htm   (or .html).
    PART II:
  6. Select FILE from the menu at the top left of the Netscape program.
  7. Select OPEN PAGE and a dialogue box will pop up.
  8. Place your mouse cursor INSIDE of the white bar and right click your mouse.  Select PASTE and the address of the page you want to edit will appear inside of the white bar.
Another method:  If you've chosen to write down the address of your page, type in that address here.  Type it exactly as you've written it down:  http://www.yourdomain.com/thepageyouwant.htm (or .html).
  9. Select COMPOSER from the radio buttons on the bottom on the dialogue box.
  10. Select OPEN and Composer will open the page you want to edit.
    PART III:
  11. The page will open and it will look like a lot of words and pictures inside of dotted lines.  These are the table borders.   You should probably keep the table borders the way they are until you learn more about how to line everything up using tables.
  12. You will also notice little yellow arrow-like icons everywhere.  If you place your mouse cursor over these arrows, you will the HTML code associated with each arrow.  Do not edit these lines until you know more about HTML.  However, if you want to edit a tag, right click your mouse button and select HTML Tag Properties.
Another method:  You may also view and edit all of the HTML for the entire page by selecting TOOLS - HTML TOOLS - EDIT HTML from the menu bar at the top of the Composer program.
